The ECC (electronic check conversion) terminal will take an image of the check and read the magnetic routing numbers, converting it to an electronic item, much like the credit card terminal does when swiping a card. An encrypted payment file is transmitted through the Federal Reserve's Automated Clearing House system where funds are electronically debited from the customer's account and deposited into the merchant's account, usually within 24 to 48 hours.
